I volunteer at... Jersey Aquatic Rescue Club.
My name is Stephen McCann. I have my own business, Oakhurst Garage in Maufant.
I help the Jersey Aquatic Rescue Club with regular duties as a lifeguard, ensuring they have sufficient cover to meet their legal requirements. All our sessions are held at Les Quennevais Sports Centre.
I started helping out with club sessions setting up equipment and moving the heavier items around poolside. I was then asked if I would like to get my lifeguard qualification and take a more active role in the club.
Running your own business can be stressful. When helping with the club I have to switch off completely from work and concentrate on the job at hand. It has helped balance work, leisure and family time.
I have made some great new friends, travelled to new places and participated in lifesaving competitions at national level. If you had told me I would a part of a medal-winning lifesaving team a few years ago I would have laughed!
I’m fitter, my swimming has improved dramatically, I have gained first aid skills which I have had to use on a number of occasions outside of the club. Before gaining my lifeguard qualifications I would not have had the skills or confidence to help.
Just do it, I'm so glad I got involved, I have gained so much from this experience and as its voluntary, it is very rewarding to give something back to the community.
