My Name is Chris Le Cornu. I am a member of the St Clement Community Support Team (Formerly founding Chairman) and a driver/deliverer for Meals on Wheels
I decided to start as a volunteer because I always had an interest in welfare of others with 37 years in HM Forces. I was a member of Parish Welfare Board before Income Support was introduced and I wanted to continue to contribute to my local community.
My typical volunteering activity is usually to collect disabled parishioners in my car and convey to them Hospital, the doctor or take them shopping, then bring them home again. I usually do this twice a week. For Meals on Wheels I collect and deliver meals to up to 10 people once per fortnight
When I am volunteering, I get a great sense of satisfaction - it raises one's awareness of the difficulties many older or disabled people face. What has surprised me the most during my time as a volunteer is the number of families and individuals who need help but are too proud/shy to ask for it
My advice to anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer, “Don’t think about it - DO IT!”. Many people are a little nervous or shy about volunteering. No need to be; in my experience volunteers get as much out of volunteering as those they help. Although the Island is well blessed with voluntary organisations, there are still many retired people with much to offer and time on their hands
